- Antibiotic peptides from bacteria and animals, in particular lantibiotics (peptide chemistry, structures, modes of antibiotic action, genetics of production, enzymatic mechanisms of posttranslational modifications, peptide engineering, producer self protection "immunity" mechanisms, development of peptide antibiotics)
- Biochemistry of the gram-positive cell wall (enzymes involved in synthesis and turnover, novel targets for antibiotics)
- Physiology and pathogenicity of staphylococci (pathogenicity factors of coagulase-negative staphylococci, metabolism of small-colony variants of Staphylococcus aureus, antibiotic resistance in staphylococci)
